Moscone Barolo Bussia is 100% Nebbiolo from a single vineyard in Bussia, the best-known cru of Monforte d'Alba. The Moscone family have grown grapes at Sant'Anna in Monforte for more than a century, since great-grandfather Giacinto began working the land; today the vineyards are looked after by cousin Marco Moscone, with consultant oenologist Donato Lanati. The family farms six hectares in Bussia, on the narrow Visette ridge first bought by Livio Moscone. Barolo Bussia comes from the highest, best-exposed part of the site, facing south and south-west at 450 to 480 metres, where white and bluish marl over limestone gives the wine a mineral edge. Vines are Guyot-trained at about 4,500 per hectare and picked by hand in October. In the cellarMoscone macerates the grapes on their skins for around 20 days, fermenting at about 26°C in stainless steel, and completes malolactic before winter. In spring the wine moves into large 50-hectolitre oak casks for at least 30 months, then into steel for at least another 12 before bottling. Barolo DOCG itself requires at least three years of ageing, a year and a half of it in oak.Producer tasting notesGarnet with orange glints. Red fruit preserve and berries, withered rose and violet, then spice, liquorice, leather and forest floor. The palate is enveloping and elegant, with polished tannins and a freshness that Moscone sees as the sign of long ageing potential. The 2016 vintageCritics rate 2016 highly. Questions about this bottle

Is 2016 a good Barolo vintage?

Yes, it is widely regarded as one of the best of recent decades. Antonio Galloni of Vinous counted 2016 among the classic, possibly epic, Piedmont vintages of the 2010s, and Kerin O'Keefe called it a classic, old-school year after a cool, wet spring and a long, late harvest that kept freshness in the wines.

When is it ready to drink?

At ten years from harvest, the 2016 is entering a good drinking window, and Moscone notes that the wine's freshness signals a strong capacity to age, so it can also be held. If you open a bottle now, decant it an hour or two ahead and serve at 16 to 18°C in a large glass.

What food suits Barolo?

Moscone recommends rich, savoury dishes: game, grilled prime cuts of meat, stews and boiled meats, plus truffle dishes, liver and sheep's milk cheeses. In practice that means slow-braised beef cheek, roast duck, mushroom risotto finished with truffle, or a board of salumi and aged pecorino.
