Moscone Barbaresco is 100% Nebbiolo from Cantina Moscone, a Langhe family estate that has grown grapes in Monforte d'Alba for more than a hundred years and now makes its wines at a new cellar in La Morra. The Barbaresco vines face south and south-west on clay marls of the Lequio formation, are Guyot-trained, and are picked entirely by hand in October.Barbaresco in briefBarbaresco DOCG covers the communes of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, plus part of Alba, on the far side of Alba from Barolo. The rules require 100% Nebbiolo and at least two years of ageing, nine months of it in oak. The local consortium describes the wine as aristocratic and elegant, and says it reaches its best between five and ten years but can live much longer. It was one of Italy's first DOCs in 1966 and one of the first DOCGs in 1980.How Moscone makes itThe grapes macerate on their skins for about 18 days, fermenting at around 26°C in stainless steel, and malolactic fermentation is finished before winter. In spring the wine goes into large 50-hectolitre oak casks for a long stay, then into steel to complete its ageing, and spends several months in bottle before release. Moscone gives an alcohol range of 14 to 14.5%.Colour and characterRuby red with garnet reflections. The consortium's general description of Barbaresco runs to raspberry and red fruit jam, geranium and violet, then spice, toasted hazelnut and vanilla. At the tableMoscone suggests rich, savoury dishes, Piedmontese cheeses and salumi, stews, boiled meats and game, and, while the wine is young, hearty first courses such as tajarin with ragù. Questions about this bottle

How is Barbaresco different from Barolo?

Both are 100% Nebbiolo from the Langhe hills around Alba, but they come from different communes and follow different rules. Barbaresco, from Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, needs at least two years of ageing with nine months in oak; Barolo needs at least three years, a year and a half in oak. Barbaresco is often described as the more elegant of the two.

When is the 2020 ready to drink?

The Barbaresco consortium says the wine reaches its best between five and ten years after the vintage, and can last much longer. That puts the 2020 at the start of its window now, through to around 2030. Decant it for an hour if you open a bottle in the next year or two.

What food suits it?

Moscone pairs its Barbaresco with rich, savoury food: Piedmontese cheeses, salumi, stews, boiled meats and game, and generous pasta dishes when the wine is young. Think tajarin with ragù, braised veal, roast quail or a mushroom risotto. Serve it at 16 to 18°C in a large glass.

How Moscone makes it

The grapes macerate on their skins for about 18 days, fermenting at around 26°C in stainless steel, and malolactic fermentation is finished before winter. At the table

Moscone suggests rich, savoury dishes, Piedmontese cheeses and salumi, stews, boiled meats and game, and, while the wine is young, hearty first courses such as tajarin with ragù. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
