Single pot still

Single pot still is the style most closely tied to Ireland. Shop Redbreast 21 Year Old, or Jameson Single Pot Still by the case of six.

Blended Irish whiskey

For mixing and everyday pouring, compare Jameson, Jameson Black Barrel, Jameson Caskmates Stout Edition and Bushmills Black Bush. See the Jameson collection.

Single malt, single grain and special releases

Try Bushmills 10 Year Old single malt, Method and Madness Single Grain, Writers' Tears Copper Pot and Midleton Very Rare. Read Irish whiskey types explained.

Choosing an Irish whiskey

Irish whiskey comes in four main styles. Single pot still is made at one distillery from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, distilled in pot stills; it is the style most closely tied to Ireland. Single malt uses only malted barley at one distillery. Single grain is distilled in column stills, and blended Irish whiskey combines two or more of these styles.

Where to start

For mixing and everyday pouring, start with a blend such as Jameson or Bushmills Black Bush. For a single malt, try Bushmills 10 Year Old. Method and Madness Single Grain shows the lighter grain style. For a special occasion, Redbreast 21 Year Old single pot still and Midleton Very Rare are the two most premium bottles in this collection.

Irish Whiskey: frequently asked questions

What makes a whiskey Irish?

Irish whiskey must be distilled and matured in wooden casks for at least three years on the island of Ireland, which includes Northern Ireland.

What is single pot still Irish whiskey?

It is whiskey from one distillery made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and distilled in pot stills. Redbreast 21 Year Old is a single pot still whiskey.

Is Irish whiskey always triple distilled?

No. Triple distillation is common, especially for pot still and many blended whiskeys, but the rules do not require it. Check the individual bottle if this matters to you.
