Where a whisky is made shapes how it tastes. Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years. A single malt is made from malted barley at one distillery, while blended whisky combines malt and grain whiskies for a rounder, more consistent style.

American whiskey follows its own rules. Bourbon is made in the USA from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak, American rye whiskey uses at least 51% rye for a spicier profile, and Tennessee whiskey is filtered through maple charcoal before it goes into the barrel. Our guide to bourbon vs rye vs Tennessee whiskey explains the differences.

Under the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association labelling standard, Japanese whisky must be distilled, aged for at least three years and bottled in Japan. Irish whiskey is often triple-distilled for a lighter, smoother style, and Australian whisky from distilleries around the country is well worth exploring.

Whisky: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between whisky and whiskey?

Only the spelling. Scotland, Japan, Canada and Australia mostly write "whisky"; Ireland and the United States mostly write "whiskey". The spelling reflects tradition, not quality or style.

What does the age on a whisky label mean?

An age statement is the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. A 12 year old whisky can contain older whisky but nothing younger than 12 years. Whisky stops ageing once it is bottled.

How should I store an opened bottle of whisky?

Keep it upright, tightly closed and out of direct sunlight at room temperature. Once a bottle is less than about a third full, the extra air can slowly flatten the flavour; decanting the rest into a smaller bottle helps.

Do you deliver whisky Australia-wide?

Yes. We deliver Australia-wide, to every state and territory, except where the delivery of alcohol is restricted by law. Metro deliveries usually arrive 3–9 business days after dispatch; regional areas can take a little longer.

How much does whisky delivery cost?

Standard delivery is $9.99 in NSW and $15 to the rest of Australia. Orders of $200 or more get free standard delivery with the code FREEDELIVERY at checkout (one promo code per order). Express delivery is $20.00. The options for your address and the exact cost are shown at checkout before you pay.

What is the difference between Scotch, bourbon and Irish whiskey?

Mainly where and how they are made. Scotch is distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years. Bourbon is American, made mostly from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels, which gives it a sweeter, vanilla-led style. Irish whiskey is made in Ireland and is often triple-distilled for a lighter, smoother spirit.

Can I send whisky as a gift?

Yes. Enter the recipient's delivery address at checkout. They must be 18 or over and may be asked for proof of age on delivery. Our Gifting Hub has gift packs and presentation boxes.
