Where a whisky is made shapes how it tastes. Scotch whisky must be distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years. A single malt is made from malted barley at one distillery, while blended whisky combines malt and grain whiskies for a rounder, more consistent style.
American whiskey follows its own rules. Bourbon is made in the USA from at least 51% corn and aged in new charred oak, American rye whiskey uses at least 51% rye for a spicier profile, and Tennessee whiskey is filtered through maple charcoal before it goes into the barrel. Under the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association labelling standard, Japanese whisky must be distilled, aged for at least three years and bottled in Japan.
