Here are five classic cocktail recipes with measured ingredients and a short shopping guide. Each recipe makes one cocktail. A cocktail can contain more than one Australian standard drink; check the labels and measure each pour. Keep water and alcohol-free alternatives available.
Aperol Spritz
- 90ml Prosecco
- 60ml Aperol
- 30ml soda water
- Ice and an orange wedge
Put plenty of ice in a large wine glass. Pour in the Prosecco, Aperol and soda, give it a gentle stir and add the orange. This follows Aperol’s published 3:2:1 recipe.
Shop Aperol 700ml and Prosecco, or use the Prosecco label guide to compare styles.
Margarita
- 50ml 100% agave tequila
- 20ml triple sec
- 15ml fresh lime juice
- Ice; optional salt on half the rim
Chill a cocktail glass. Shake the tequila, triple sec and lime with ice, then strain into the glass. Salt only part of the rim if you want a choice with each sip. These measures follow the International Bartenders Association specification.
Compare 818 Blanco and Casamigos Blanco, with Bols Triple Sec. Fresh limes and salt are separate grocery items.
Old Fashioned
- 45ml bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 sugar cube
- A few dashes of Angostura bitters
- A little plain water and ice
- Orange peel or slice and a cocktail cherry
In a short glass, dampen the sugar with bitters and water and work it until dissolved. Add ice and whiskey, stir to chill, then garnish. The measures and garnish follow the International Bartenders Association specification.
Our current bourbon choices include Eagle Rare 10 Year Old and Weller Special Reserve, with Angostura Bitters. Read bourbon, rye and Tennessee whiskey explained for the broader styles.
Paloma recipe
For one serve, measure 100% agave tequila (50ml), freshly squeezed lime juice (5ml), pink grapefruit soda (100ml) and a small pinch of salt. Add the tequila and lime to a tall glass, add ice and salt, then gently combine with the soda. Finish with a lime slice if you like.
818 Tequila Blanco 700ml is a current tequila option; the producer states that its tequila uses 100% Blue Weber agave. Buy the lime, salt and grapefruit soda separately. Measures follow the IBA Paloma specification.
Piña Colada recipe
For one serve, use white rum (50ml), coconut cream (30ml) and fresh pineapple juice (50ml). Blend the measured ingredients with ice until combined and pour into a serving glass. Pineapple makes a simple garnish.
See Bacardi Carta Blanca white rum 700ml. Get the coconut cream, pineapple juice and ice separately. This uses the proportions in the IBA Piña Colada specification. Measure the rum before blending and keep water and alcohol-free choices available.
