Yamazaki 18 Year Old Mizunara 100th Anniversary was released in 2023 to mark a century of Suntory whisky. Shinjiro Torii founded the Yamazaki distillery in 1923 at the foot of Mt Tennozan, making it Japan's first malt whisky distillery, and this centenary bottling celebrates the oak most closely tied to Japanese whisky. The standard Yamazaki 18 is matured mainly in sherry oak. This edition is matured exclusively in casks of Mizunara, Japanese oak, for more than 18 years, and bottled at 48%. Trade coverage of the launch in mid-2023 listed it among a small set of limited centenary releases, alongside Hakushu 18 Year Old Peated Malt.Tasting notes from SuntorySuntory describes a deep reddish amber whisky with sandalwood, coconut and incense on the nose. The palate opens on dark cherry, ripe peach, cinnamon and nutmeg, subtly spiced with an undertone of Japanese incense, and the finish is long and lingering with clove, sandalwood and dried coconut. Chief blender Shinji Fukuyo has said that after long maturation the aroma took on a gem-like brilliance. Suntory's listing also confirms the bottling qualifies under the Japanese industry standard for labelling a whisky as Japanese whisky.ServingAt 48% it is stronger than many 18-year-olds, so pour a modest measure, let it sit for a few minutes, then try a few drops of water to bring the sandalwood and coconut forward. A tulip nosing glass suits it.For collectorsThe bottle comes in centenary presentation packaging. If you plan to keep it sealed, store it upright, away from light and temperature swings, and keep the box in good condition. Questions about this bottle

How is the Mizunara edition different from standard Yamazaki 18?

Suntory matures the standard Yamazaki 18 mainly in sherry oak, while this edition is matured exclusively in Japanese Mizunara oak casks for more than 18 years. It is also bottled stronger, at 48%. The result leans towards sandalwood, coconut and incense, with dark cherry and ripe peach on the palate.

How many bottles were released?

Suntory has not published a bottle count that we could verify, so we will not quote one. What is documented is that it was launched in 2023 as one of a few limited editions celebrating 100 years of Suntory whisky, sold through selected retailers. Treat any exact numbers you see elsewhere with caution.

Is it a good collector bottle?

It ticks the boxes collectors look for: a limited centenary edition from Japan's first malt whisky distillery, an 18-year age statement, Mizunara-only maturation and anniversary packaging. That said, we do not give investment advice or predict prices. Buy it because you want to own or open it, and store it upright and out of the light.
