Kay Brothers Shiraz has been made at Amery, in McLaren Vale, by the same family since brothers Herbert (Bert) and Frederick (Fred) Kay took over the property in 1890. The Kays have tended the Amery vineyard for more than 130 years, and it is one of McLaren Vale's original vineyards. Today Elspeth Kay carries on the family connection, working with general manager and chief winemaker Duncan Kennedy.Hillside Shiraz is one of the family's two icon wines, alongside the Cuthbert Cabernet, both established around the turn of the 21st century as the range grew. The name comes from the estate itself: the Amery Hillside vineyard on the family property at Kays Road.Hillside and Block 6Block 6 is a single patch in the south-east corner of the same Amery Hillside vineyard. Bert and Fred planted it in 1892 with 5,890 Shiraz rootlings grown from cuttings bought from Thomas Hardy's Tintara vineyard, and around 2,000 of those original vines are still producing. Colin Kay first bottled Block 6 as a single-vineyard wine in 1984.
