Campi Lunghi is the traditional-style Amarone from I Campi, the estate of winemaker Flavio Prà in the Illasi valley, east of Verona. The name means "long fields", after the unusually long vine rows of the source vineyard: six hectares at Progno di Cellore, high in the valley at about 270 metres, facing south to south-east on stony soil in a well-ventilated, windy spot. Vines range from 1971 to 2003 plantings, trained on pergoletta veronese and Guyot. What makes it AmaroneAmarone is made from grapes that are dried before fermentation. In the Valpolicella consortium's words, the bunches rest in a drying loft, the fruttaio, for around 100 to 120 days, concentrating sugars and polyphenols; they are then vinified in winter and fermented slowly to a dry, high-alcohol wine, finished with long ageing in wood. For Campi Lunghi the blend is 85% Corvina and Corvinone, 10% Rondinella and 5% Croatina. After maceration and fermentation in steel and wood, the wine spends six months on its lees with bâtonnage, 18 months in barrique and 18 months in bottle, and is bottled in Easter week three years after harvest. I Campi lists it at 16% alcohol.StyleI Campi describes an intense ruby wine in the traditional school: jammy fruit and small red berries, with chocolate, black pepper and vanilla from the oak, and fresh herbal notes that come from the variety and altitude of the vineyards. When to open itThe producer puts this wine's best evolutionary peak at around two years after bottling and calls its ageing capacity very long, so the 2020 is drinking now and can also be cellared. Questions about this bottle

How is Amarone made?

Amarone starts with dried grapes. According to the Valpolicella consortium, bunches rest in a ventilated drying loft, the fruttaio, for about 100 to 120 days, which concentrates sugars and polyphenols. The grapes are vinified in winter and slowly fermented to a dry, full, high-alcohol wine, then aged in wood. Campi Lunghi spends 18 months in barrique.

How long can it be cellared?

I Campi rates Campi Lunghi's ageing capacity as very long and puts its best evolutionary peak around two years after bottling. The 2020 was bottled in 2023, so it is already in a good window and can be held for many years more if stored lying down, cool and dark.

What food suits Amarone?

Amarone's richness suits slow-cooked and savoury food. We like it with braised beef cheeks, osso buco, game, risotto made with Amarone, or hard cheeses such as aged Monte Veronese and Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve it at 16 to 18°C, decanted, in a large glass; it is also a fine wine to sip on its own after dinner.

I Campi describes an intense ruby wine in the traditional school: jammy fruit and small red berries, with chocolate, black pepper and vanilla from the oak, and fresh herbal notes that come from the variety and altitude of the vineyards.

When to open it

Food

Our suggestions: braised beef cheeks, osso buco, risotto all'Amarone, or a plate of aged Monte Veronese and Parmigiano Reggiano with dried figs.
