Scotch Whisky: frequently asked questions

What does the age on a whisky label mean?

An age statement is the age of the youngest whisky in the bottle. A 12 year old whisky can contain older whisky but nothing younger than 12 years. Whisky stops ageing once it is bottled.

Is single malt better than blended whisky?

Neither is better by definition. Single malt Scotch is malted-barley whisky from one distillery; blended Scotch combines malt and grain whiskies from several distilleries. Compare them in our guide: single malt vs blended whisky.
