Rum and brandy buying guide
Rum is distilled from sugar cane products, usually molasses and sometimes fresh cane juice. White rums are light and made for mixing; gold and aged rums take on colour and notes of vanilla, caramel and spice from oak; spiced rums are flavoured with spices such as vanilla and cinnamon. Australia has its own rum tradition too, with Queensland's Bundaberg the best-known name.
Brandy is distilled from wine or fermented fruit. Cognac is brandy from the Cognac region of France, double-distilled in copper pot stills and aged in oak, with VS, VSOP and XO marking minimum ages. Read cognac grades explained before you choose.
Aged rum and brandy are usually sipped neat or over a little ice. White and spiced rums suit a daiquiri, a mojito or a rum and cola.
We ship rum and brandy Australia-wide, to every state and territory. Standard delivery costs $9.99 in NSW and $15 to the rest of Australia (free on orders of $200 or more with the code FREEDELIVERY) and Express is $20. You must be 18 or over to order.
Rum & Brandy: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between white, dark and spiced rum?
White rum is usually unaged or filtered to remove colour, giving a light spirit for mixing. Gold and dark rums are aged and sometimes coloured, with richer caramel and oak flavours. Spiced rum is flavoured with spices such as vanilla, cinnamon or clove.
Is cognac the same as brandy?
All cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is cognac. Cognac must come from the Cognac region of France and follow its rules on grapes, distillation and ageing; other brandies can be made anywhere, from grapes or other fruit.
How should I store an opened bottle of rum or brandy?
Upright, tightly sealed and away from heat and direct sunlight. Spirits do not keep ageing once bottled, and an opened bottle stays in good condition for a long time, although the flavour can slowly fade when the bottle is nearly empty.
Do you deliver rum Australia-wide?
Yes, to every Australian state and territory except where the delivery of alcohol is restricted by law. Standard delivery is $9.99 in NSW and $15 to the rest of Australia, free on orders of $200 or more with the code FREEDELIVERY; Express is $20.00.
