Grenache

Explore Grenache red wine through both single-variety bottles and blends. Penfolds Bin 21 puts Grenache at the centre, while Bin 138 combines it with Shiraz and Mataro. Those names identify different wines, so compare the vintage and grape details before choosing. The current collection shows available formats, with more producer information on each product page. Start with the style and meal you have in mind, then use region, vintage and the full label to make a clear comparison between the bottles.

Compare Grenache with a Grenache-based blend

Penfolds Bin 21 Grenache 2025 is sourced from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Penfolds Bin 138 2024 is a Barossa blend of 48% Grenache, 46% Shiraz and 6% Mataro. These examples show two distinct approaches within one producer's range. A Grenache collection can include both, so the grape proportions and complete wine name are more informative than assuming every listing is a straight Grenache.

Keep vintage details attached to the right release

Penfolds gives Bin 21 2025 ten months in French oak hogsheads, with 28% new oak. Bin 138 2024 has its own published maturation approach, using seasoned French and American oak. Those are release-specific facts, not fixed rules for every vintage. The Bin numbers are names, not ages or rankings. When comparing bottles or looking up a review, match the full wine name and vintage first so you do not borrow a score, region or barrel detail from another release.

Use a meal to explore the difference

Our suggestion is to try a modest pour with roast vegetables, lamb or a mushroom dish. Serve the wines slightly cool in similar glasses and keep the food the same if making a comparison. Return to each glass during the meal before deciding whether to decant. Record the texture and balance you enjoy in your own words. A producer's tasting note can help you narrow the options, but you do not need to identify every descriptor to choose the bottle you would like again.

Select the right format for your plans

Check the bottle and case options on the individual product page, then review the quantity in your basket. Where a case is offered, confirm any particular vintage requirement before ordering. Delivered Australia-wide. Standard delivery is $9.99 in NSW and $15 to the rest of Australia, free on orders of $200 or more with the code FREEDELIVERY, and Express is $20. For a meal planned around a specific date, review delivery information at checkout and allow time to serve the wine at your preferred temperature. Choose the quantity that fits your needs rather than treating a delivery threshold as a reason to buy more.

Grenache: frequently asked questions

Is every Grenache wine a blend?

No. The linked examples include Penfolds Bin 21 Grenache and Bin 138, which combines Grenache with Shiraz and Mataro. Read the complete product name and vintage-specific grape details when choosing. A shared collection category does not mean every bottle contains the same varieties or follows the same winemaking approach.

What is the difference between Bin 21 and Bin 138?

Bin 21 is a Grenache wine; the 2025 release comes from the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. Bin 138 2024 is a Barossa blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Compare the confirmed vintages and producer notes, then choose according to your meal and the style you would like to explore.

Should I chill Grenache red wine?

Our serving suggestion is slightly cool rather than warm, beginning with a modest pour in a roomy wine glass. Revisit it during the meal and adjust to your own preference. If comparing two wines, start them at similar temperatures and use matching glasses so the conditions help you make a useful comparison.
