moscone-barbaresco-docg-750ml
Moscone Barbaresco DOCG 2020 750ml

Moscone Barbaresco is 100% Nebbiolo from Cantina Moscone, a Langhe family estate that has grown grapes in Monforte d'Alba for more than a hundred years and now makes its wines at a new cellar in La Morra. The Barbaresco vines face south and south-west on clay marls of the Lequio formation, are Guyot-trained, and are picked entirely by hand in October.

Barbaresco in brief

Barbaresco DOCG covers the communes of Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso, plus part of Alba, on the far side of Alba from Barolo. The rules require 100% Nebbiolo and at least two years of ageing, nine months of it in oak. The local consortium describes the wine as aristocratic and elegant, and says it reaches its best between five and ten years but can live much longer. It was one of Italy's first DOCs in 1966 and one of the first DOCGs in 1980.

How Moscone makes it

The grapes macerate on their skins for about 18 days, fermenting at around 26°C in stainless steel, and malolactic fermentation is finished before winter. In spring the wine goes into large 50-hectolitre oak casks for a long stay, then into steel to complete its ageing, and spends several months in bottle before release. Moscone gives an alcohol range of 14 to 14.5%.

Colour and character

Ruby red with garnet reflections. The consortium's general description of Barbaresco runs to raspberry and red fruit jam, geranium and violet, then spice, toasted hazelnut and vanilla.

At the table

Moscone suggests rich, savoury dishes, Piedmontese cheeses and salumi, stews, boiled meats and game, and, while the wine is young, hearty first courses such as tajarin with ragù.
